Law enforcement agencies conduct raids on illicit tobacco and vape retailers

Authorities in Australia and the United States have conducted significant enforcement operations targeting the sale of illicit tobacco, flavored vaping products, and counterfeit goods.

In Western Sydney, NSW Health inspectors and NSW Police closed ten retail stores for 90 days following the seizure of over 192,000 illicit cigarettes, 1,450 vapes, and 40 kg of loose-leaf tobacco. The seized items have an estimated street value exceeding $256,000. NSW Health Minister Ryan Park noted that high federal tobacco excise rates contribute to the growth of the black market.

In Los Angeles, a multi-agency task force executed search warrants at 12 businesses, resulting in the arrest of 24 individuals. The operation led to the seizure of eight tractor-trailer loads of illicit products, including prohibited flavored tobacco and counterfeit merchandise. Participating agencies included the Los Angeles Police Department, the California Department of Justice, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
