Law enforcement agencies honor women on National Police Woman Day

Law enforcement agencies across North America observed National Police Woman Day on September 12, using the occasion to recognize women serving in various roles, including patrol, investigations, and command staff.

In Cheyenne, the Cheyenne Police Department highlighted historical milestones, noting that Mary Ricketts was hired as the first sworn female patrol officer in 1975. Other achievements mentioned include the department’s first female sergeant in 2011, the first all-female graduating class in 2019, and the appointment of the first female bomb technician in 2026.

Other agencies, such as the Edmonton Police Service in Canada and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, also participated in the recognition. Departments like the West Palm Beach Police Department and the Bellingham Police Department focused on the multifaceted roles women hold as officers, mentors, and community members.
