Argentina debt crisis: Unrecoverable debtors rise 60% in one year

A report by the Instituto Argentina Grande (IAG), utilizing data from the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA), reveals a significant rise in financial delinquency across Argentina. The number of debtors classified as 'unrecoverable'—those with arrears exceeding one year—has surged by 60% in a single year, reaching approximately 3.4 million people. This group represents 16.8% of the total 20.6 million debtors in the country's financial and non-banking systems.

Overall, 5.6 million people in Argentina currently have at least one credit line with arrears, accounting for 26.9% of all debtors. The data indicates that the crisis is heavily concentrated in low-value obligations; half of the unrecoverable debtors owe $77,900 or less. This pattern suggests that the spike in critical over-indebtedness is driven by an inability to cover basic daily costs rather than large-scale consumer spending. The delinquency rate is particularly high among young people, with 38.1% of those aged 15 to 29 facing arrears.
