Law enforcement agencies warn of phone scams impersonating officials
Law enforcement agencies in North Judson and Allegheny County are issuing warnings regarding sophisticated phone scams where criminals impersonate police or sheriff's officials to extort money from citizens.
In these schemes, scammers often use high-pressure tactics, threatening individuals with arrest for missed jury duty, warrants, or issues involving incarcerated relatives. To create a sense of legitimacy, scammers may use publicly available information, such as inmate rosters or sex offender registries, to gain the victim's trust.
Victims have been instructed to remain on the phone while making payments via ATMs, cryptocurrency kiosks, gift cards, or electronic payment apps like PayPal and Bitcoin. Authorities emphasize that no sheriff's office, court, or law enforcement agency will ever demand payment over the phone through these methods. Officials advise citizens to hang up immediately if they receive suspicious calls and to contact the agency directly using an official phone number to verify the claim.
