Law enforcement crack down on copper cable theft in South Africa and US
Law enforcement agencies in South Africa and the United States have conducted operations targeting the theft of copper cables and telecommunications infrastructure.
In South Africa’s Northern Cape, a man named Arrie Paulse received an effective seven-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to tampering with and damaging essential Telkom infrastructure. In a separate incident near De Aar, police arrested two men following the discovery of stolen copper cable on a farm.
In the United States, California authorities recovered approximately four tons of stolen copper wire, valued at an estimated $102,000, during a sting operation in downtown Los Angeles. The operation, involving the California Department of Justice and local police, resulted in two arrests.
Officials in both regions emphasized that copper theft poses a significant threat to public safety. Such crimes can lead to power outages, disrupt 911 emergency services, damage water and sewer systems, and interfere with traffic signals and public transportation.
