Law enforcement investigates viral “Cat in the Hat” AI threat trend

Law enforcement agencies across the United States are monitoring a viral social media trend involving the “Cat in the Hat” character. The trend features AI-generated or filmed videos depicting the Dr. Seuss character lurking outside homes and schools, often in unsettling or threatening contexts.

In Warren County, Tennessee, a high school student faces prosecution for making threats of mass violence on school property following an investigation into an AI-generated image related to the trend. The investigation was a joint effort involving the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, the McMinnville Police Department, and Homeland Security Investigations. Officials stated that additional charges are expected.

In Avery County, North Carolina, the Sheriff’s Office is also monitoring the trend after students reported viewing the content. While officials there have not identified any specific or credible threats to their local community, they are working with state and federal partners to determine the scope of the activity. Authorities are urging students and parents to report such content rather than sharing or forwarding it.
