Law enforcement agencies in Pulaski County and Boston are issuing warnings to residents regarding a rise in rental property scams. These fraudulent schemes often involve scammers posing as landlords or real estate agents using legitimate property photos and information stolen from actual listings.

Scammers typically pressure potential tenants to provide upfront payments—such as security deposits, application fees, or first month’s rent—before the individual has had a chance to verify the property or the owner. These payments are often requested via methods that are difficult to recover, including wire transfers, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or cash apps.

Authorities recommend that residents research landlords, visit properties in person, and verify ownership through official tax assessment records. Officials also advise against making quick decisions under pressure and warn that these scams can lead to identity theft if sensitive personal information is shared with unverified sources.
