Law Society celebrates Black solicitors for Black History Month

The Law Society of England and Wales is marking Black History Month by celebrating the contributions of Black solicitors to the legal sector and wider UK communities. This year’s theme, ‘Honouring Our Communities’, aims to highlight the leadership and impact of these professionals.

Data from the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) indicates that while 20% of practising certificate holders are from Black, Asian, or minority ethnic groups, Black solicitors represent 3% of those who have disclosed their ethnicity. Representation in senior roles remains a challenge; Black, Asian, and minority ethnic groups account for 14% of partners and directors, with Black solicitors making up 3% of those senior positions. In large law firms with 50 or more partners, Black solicitors hold only 1% of partner roles.

Law Society president Mark Evans stated that Black history is an integral part of Britain’s national story. He noted that the organization remains committed to supporting visibility, representation, and inclusion through its equality, diversity, and inclusion strategy, which focuses on strengthening diversity in senior leadership and creating inclusive workplace cultures.
