Law Society urges UK support for small legal firms

The Law Society is urging the UK government, regulators, and local authorities to provide increased support for small law firms and sole practitioners. Research commissioned by the Law Society and conducted by YouGov and the Centre for Economics and Business Research indicates that 85% of small firms identify recruitment and retention as their primary challenge.

Operational pressures, including wage inflation, rising professional indemnity insurance premiums, and regulatory compliance costs, are reportedly squeezing margins. The research notes that smaller firms face a disproportionate burden from compliance tasks and risk falling behind larger competitors due to a lack of resources for investing in digital transformation and artificial intelligence.

To ensure the sustainability of these firms, which the Law Society describes as vital public services for access to justice, the organization is calling for full funding for Level 7 solicitor apprenticeships, reduced regulatory costs, and support for AI adoption. Former Law Society president Mark Evans emphasized that these firms are essential for providing legal services in rural communities and small towns across England and Wales.
