Lawn Care Advice: Mow Less in Summer and Verticut in Spring

The German Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) advises homeowners to mow their lawns as rarely as possible during summer. Wait until the grass reaches about 20 cm, use the highest mower setting, and mow in sections, leaving border strips or small flower islands untouched. This approach preserves wildflowers such as daisies and clover, providing food for insects, reduces the need for watering, and supports soil organisms.

For spring lawn maintenance, verticutting (removing thatch, moss and dead grass) is recommended to improve aeration and nutrient uptake. The optimal period is April to early May, when the ground is thawed and dry enough. Light mowing before verticutting helps the grass recover quickly. Verticutting can also be done in autumn (late August to early October) if the lawn shows heavy moss or weed growth, but summer conditions should be avoided.
