Lawn care: How to properly fertilize grass in autumn

For lawns featuring cool-climate grass species—such as English ryegrass, reed canary grass, red fescue, and meadow fescue—autumn is the ideal time for fertilization to recover from summer heat stress.

When selecting fertilizer, nitrogen is the most critical nutrient for promoting healthy growth and chlorophyll production. It is recommended to look for a high nitrogen content in the NPK ratio (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium). While iron can temporarily darken the color of grass, liquid applications are generally more effective for color than granular iron.

For optimal results, it is suggested to apply between 2.5 and 5 grams of pure nitrogen per square meter, depending on the specific product used.
