Lawn care: Preparing grass for autumn and winter after drought

Following a prolonged period of heat and low precipitation, lawns may appear brown and damaged. However, if the roots remain alive, proper autumn care can help restore the grass and prepare it for winter.

Key recovery steps include thorough watering to ensure moisture reaches deep into the root system, rather than relying solely on rainfall. For heavily damaged areas, liquid organic fertilizers containing vitamins and amino acids can assist in regeneration.

Soil aeration is also critical, as drought can cause soil to harden and compact, preventing water and air from reaching the roots. After aeration, applying sand can help improve soil structure. Fertilization should only occur after the lawn has begun to recover, focusing on autumn fertilizers rich in phosphorus and potassium to strengthen roots and increase cold resistance, while avoiding high nitrogen levels.
