Lawn care strategies for Fescue and cool-season grasses

Late summer and early autumn present critical maintenance windows for cool-season grasses like Tall Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass. In regions such as Virginia Beach, August often sees a resurgence of fungal disease. This is driven by a combination of lingering coastal humidity, warm days, and slightly cooler nights that encourage heavy morning dew and extended leaf wetness, creating an ideal environment for pathogens.

To aid recovery from summer stress and soil compaction, experts recommend aeration and reseeding for cool-season grasses between mid-August and mid-October. Aeration helps break up compacted soil, improving water and nutrient absorption, air movement, and root health. However, this timing is specific to cool-season varieties; warm-season grasses like Zoysia or Bermudagrass should instead be aerated in late spring or early summer during their active growth periods.
