Lawn irrigation: Expert tips for watering during hot weather
Gardening expert Elmar Mai suggests that watering lawns daily during hot, dry conditions is ineffective because the water often fails to reach the roots. Instead, it is more efficient to perform thorough watering only two to three times per week.
A simple method to measure irrigation needs involves using an empty jam jar, which typically holds about 200 millilitres. By placing the jar in the middle of the lawn, one can determine if the sprinkler provides enough water once the jar is filled halfway.
Timing is also critical; early morning is considered the ideal time for watering, though evening is acceptable if overnight temperatures remain relatively cool. While a brown lawn may be aesthetically unappealing during a drought, experts note that grass can recover naturally once regular rainfall returns. Using a little fertiliser can also help improve the resilience of newly grown grass.
