Lawn maintenance and repair strategies for healthy grass

Maintaining a healthy lawn requires addressing specific causes of damage and preparing for seasonal changes. Bare patches can result from heavy foot traffic, drought, disease, pets, shade, or soil compaction. To repair these areas, the soil must be prepared by removing old plant debris and loosening the top layer to allow young roots to develop. Successful reseeding depends on consistent moisture and optimal temperatures, making spring and late summer ideal periods for recovery.

During hot summer months, lawns face increased stress from high temperatures and lack of rain. To protect the grass, it is recommended to increase mowing height, as longer blades provide more shade to the soil and reduce evaporation. Irrigation strategies should focus on deep watering—watering less frequently but more thoroughly—to encourage roots to grow deeper into the soil. Watering in the early morning is preferred to minimize evaporation. In cases of severe soil compaction or nutrient deficiency, professional maintenance may be required to ensure proper water infiltration and plant health.
