Lawn maintenance: Managing moss and seasonal fertilization
Maintaining a healthy lawn involves addressing soil conditions and seasonal nutrient needs. Moss invasion is often a symptom of soil that is too acidic, compacted, or excessively moist. To combat moss without aggressive chemicals, liming can be used to raise the soil pH. Since moss thrives in environments with a pH below 6, while grass prefers a range between 6 and 7, applying lime in autumn or early spring can help restore balance.
Regarding seasonal maintenance, autumn fertilization should be approached with caution. As grasses enter dormancy in colder regions, their nutrient requirements decrease. Before applying fertilizer, it is recommended to assess the lawn's color and health, and to perform soil tests to determine if additional nutrients are actually necessary, as excessive application can lead to waste.
