Lawson launches dual-themed product line in Japan
Lawson is launching a new series of products in Japan categorized under two themes: ‘Too Much Focus!’ (Itten Toppa) and ‘Too Luxurious!’ (Zeitaku Sugi). The ‘Too Much Focus!’ line aims to reduce costs by centering meals around a single main ingredient, such as a 297-yen salmon bento or a 397-yen teriyaki sausage rice bowl. This strategy focuses on cutting manufacturing and packaging complexity rather than ingredient quality.
In contrast, the ‘Too Luxurious!’ line features premium items like a 786-yen chestnut Mont Blanc made with Japanese chestnuts from Kumamoto and Ibaraki, and various seafood or meat-heavy dishes priced around 797 yen.
The release of these contrasting products has sparked social media debate. While some critics viewed the single-ingredient bentos as a sign of economic decline, analysts suggest the strategy is a response to shifting consumer behavior, allowing customers to choose between extreme budget-conscious options and high-end ‘reward consumption’ within the convenience store channel.
