Lawson launches low-cost retail model in Miyagi

Lawson is launching a new low-cost retail model called ‘with LAWSON’ designed to serve areas with low population density where traditional convenience store operations are often not profitable. The first location, ‘Nikkori Shoten with LAWSON’, is scheduled to open on August 31 in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture.

This model minimizes capital investment by repurposing existing local shops or facilities rather than constructing new buildings. The company will optimize store size, product assortment, and services based on specific local needs. To manage these locations efficiently, Lawson will utilize remote-controlled cameras, allowing headquarters staff to monitor sales trends and floor conditions without traveling to the site.

The inaugural store is a renovated direct sales outlet of Kaneki Suisan, a local seafood wholesaler. The shop will offer approximately 1,000 items, including fresh produce, daily necessities, and processed seafood products. This initiative is part of Lawson’s broader ‘Community Symbiosis Convenience Store’ project and its ‘Happy Lawson Town’ concept, aimed at maintaining shopping environments in aging or depopulated regions.
