Lawson tests JPYC stablecoin payments on existing POS terminals
On August 6, Lawson conducted Japan’s first trial of stablecoin payments using its existing point‑of‑sale (POS) terminals at the Takanawa Gateway City store in Tokyo. Customers scanned a barcode displayed in the HashPort Wallet, which the POS read and processed the payment in the same way as a QR‑code transaction, with no special hardware changes. The trial used the yen‑pegged stablecoin JPYC and demonstrated a gas‑less, “no‑extra‑step” experience for both shoppers and store staff.
Lawson’s financial‑company president Eikoh Haruta, HashPort CEO Seihiro Yoshida, Canal Payment Service CEO Ryo‑suke Shimizu, and JPYC representative Noritaka Okabe attended the demonstration. HashPort handled the blockchain connection while Canal Payment Service linked the wallet to the POS system, absorbing any technical differences. The experiment showed that existing POS infrastructure can accommodate stablecoin payments with minimal operational impact, though Lawson said it will evaluate refund processes and merchant readiness before any wider rollout.
