Lawson's Karaage Kun reaches 5 billion sales, marks 40th anniversary

On August 5‑6 2024, Lawson announced that its original fried snack “Karaage Kun” has surpassed a cumulative 5.009 billion units sold since its launch on 15 April 1986. The total distance the products would cover if laid end‑to‑end is about 1 million km, roughly 25 times the Earth's circumference.

To celebrate the milestone and the brand’s upcoming 40th anniversary in 2026, Lawson is running a promotion until 10 August 2024 that adds two extra pieces to each purchase at the regular price. The snack is offered in four core flavours—Regular, Red, Hokkaido Cheese and Lemon—and has expanded to more than 430 variants, including regional and collaboration flavours. Production switched to 100 % domestic chicken breast in 2014 and to domestic salt and chilies for certain flavours in 2018.

Lawson expects the product to be recognized by Guinness World Records on 5 March 2026 as the “most sold fried‑chicken snack brand” for the 2024 calendar year.
