Lawsuit begins following multi-million euro bank heist in Strausberg

A civil lawsuit has commenced in Frankfurt (Oder) following a major heist at a Sparkasse bank in Strausberg. Two safe deposit box owners are suing the bank, alleging that it failed to implement adequate security measures to prevent the burglary.

The legal dispute involves claims totaling approximately 20,000 euros and 13,000 euros. The proceedings aim to determine the specific contents of the emptied boxes.

The original incident occurred on Easter Monday in 2023, when masked perpetrators gained access to the vault by drilling through a wall from an adjacent room using a core drill. The thieves reportedly spent several hours, and potentially days, performing the breach. During the heist, they targeted approximately 400 safe deposit boxes, emptying the contents of roughly 300. The total value of the stolen cash and valuables exceeded 12 million euros. While a suspect was previously detained in Berlin-Neukölln based on DNA evidence and photographic clues, the investigation has faced challenges in securing a conviction.
