Voter data collection lawsuit targets DHS efforts

A federal lawsuit has been filed in Washington, D.C., challenging the Trump administration's efforts to collect and analyze voter data. The complaint, filed by the League of Women Voters, the Electronic Privacy Information Center, and the League of United Latin American Citizens, alleges that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has obtained voter files from at least 47 states in a manner that violates federal law and privacy rights.

The lawsuit claims the DHS is conducting a secretive probe that combines voter files with commercial datasets, disregarding federal safeguards. While the administration maintains these efforts are necessary to address concerns regarding noncitizen voting, the plaintiffs argue the collection flouts the constitutional authority granted to states. The legal challenge seeks to have the court declare the collection illegal, block the policy, and order the DHS to delete the information already gathered.

Separately, various regions across the United States are preparing for the November 3 election. In New York, voters are being provided with guides regarding registration deadlines and candidate lists for state and local offices. In Florida, early voting sites in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties are active, with specific instructions provided for mail-in ballot drop-offs and identification requirements. In Texas, early voting for local and county seats is also underway.
