Lawyer and public defender Lenin Zambrano assassinated in Manta

Lenin Zambrano Salcedo, a prominent lawyer and public defender, was assassinated by gunfire on Friday night, August 14, in Manta, Ecuador. The attack occurred on the road to San Juan as Zambrano was approaching his vehicle after leaving a sports complex.

Armed individuals intercepted Zambrano and opened fire. Although he was rushed to a private clinic, medical staff were unable to save him. Prior to the incident, Zambrano had participated in a press conference regarding the organization of a sporting event.

As a public defender, Zambrano provided legal representation to individuals lacking the resources for private counsel, handling cases involving theft, robbery, assault, and drug-related offenses. The National Police have cordoned off the scene and are collecting ballistic evidence to identify the perpetrators and establish a motive. This killing brings the total number of violent deaths recorded in the Manta district in 2026 to 329.
