Lawyer arrested in Mumbai airport in connection to Rs 28,000 crore cyber fraud case

Enforcement Directorate officials arrested lawyer Rasesh Upadhyay, also known as Rasesh Shah, at Mumbai airport while he was attempting to flee to Delhi. The arrest is linked to a massive pan-India cybercrime and digital arrest fraud network involving approximately Rs 28,000 crore.

The investigation began following a complaint from a woman in Goa who lost Rs 2.60 crore to a cyber fraud syndicate. Authorities discovered that the network utilized over 400 fake accounts held in the names of proxy directors to divert funds. These funds were reportedly converted into foreign currency through money transfer centers with Reserve Bank of India authorization.

The cyber network is implicated in over 300 complaints and 160 cases across 20 Indian states and union territories. Investigators found that approximately Rs 2,900 crore of the total amount had been deposited in cash. Upadhyay allegedly acted as a key intermediary, using bribes to release frozen bank accounts.
