Lawyer detained in Dajabón for transporting irregular Haitian migrants

Lawyer Sandra Maribel Furcal Guzmán has been detained in Dajabón, Dominican Republic, after being caught transporting three Haitian nationals with irregular migratory status. The incident occurred in the El Laurel community, where military personnel discovered the individuals in the luggage compartment of her Honda CR-V.

During the arrest, which was captured in a viral video, Furcal Guzmán expressed concern regarding her professional standing, stating, “I am a lawyer. For God's sake, I am going to lose my job,” referring to her position as a supervisor at the Ministry of Education. She also identified herself as a cousin of former Education Minister Roberto Fulcar in an attempt to intervene in the procedure.

A court in the Dajabón Judicial District has imposed coercion measures against her, including a requirement for periodic appearances, the supervision of a guarantor, and a travel ban for six months while the judicial process continues.
