Lawyer Kwon Kyung-ae accused of fraud by school violence victim's family

The family of the late Park Ju-won, a victim of school violence, has filed a fraud complaint against attorney Kwon Kyung-ae at the Seocho Police Station. The complaint alleges that Kwon intentionally misled the family to collect legal fees.

According to the family, Kwon committed several professional errors during the initial lawsuit, such as failing to claim lost future earnings and incorrectly naming defendants. The family claims that Kwon failed to disclose that the statute of limitations for these claims had already expired, yet still persuaded them to proceed with an appeal to secure additional legal fees.

Furthermore, Kwon reportedly failed to appear for three consecutive appellate court hearings in late 2022, which resulted in an automatic loss under civil procedure laws. Kwon allegedly withheld the news of this loss from the family for five months, causing them to miss the deadline for a final appeal to the Supreme Court. While a previous Supreme Court ruling ordered Kwon and her law firm to pay 65 million won in damages to the family, the current criminal complaint seeks punishment for fraud.
