Lawyer proposes chemical castration for child sex offenders in Romania
Vlad Baculescu, a lawyer from the Stan & Baculescu Civil Society of Lawyers, has proposed that Romania consider introducing chemical castration for individuals who commit sexual offenses against children under the age of 14.
Baculescu argues that the extreme gravity of these crimes and the long-term trauma suffered by victims necessitate more than just imprisonment. He suggests that rehabilitation for such offenders is nearly impossible through standard prison sentences alone and highlights a high risk of recidivism.
Chemical castration would involve medical treatment to reduce sexual hormone levels and impulses rather than surgical intervention. The proposal is expected to spark significant debate regarding legal, medical, and ethical implications, particularly concerning fundamental human rights and the proportionality of punishment.
