Luka Misetiç questions timing of Hashim Thaçi's sentence

Luka Misetiç, the lawyer for former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi, has raised questions regarding the timing of the Specialist Court's verdict. Misetiç pointed to a video where Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić claimed that during a meeting in Paris on September 10, a 'world and European leader'—identified by Misetiç as French President Emmanuel Macron—informed him that Thaçi would receive a 'heavy sentence.' This claim comes several days before the court officially announced the verdict on September 16, 2026.

The Specialist Court sentenced Hashim Thaçi to 25 years in prison, alongside Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi, and Jakup Krasniqi, who received 18, 13, and 25 years respectively, for war crimes. The court did not find the defendants guilty of crimes against humanity.

In Kosovo, political tensions remain high. Endrit Thaçi has called for political parties to cooperate on legislative changes regarding the Special Court. Meanwhile, Ursula von der Leyen has emphasized that the independence of the Hague-based court must be respected and its verdicts upheld.
