Lawyer Renato Nery Murder Sparks Family Fear in Brazil

Lawyer Renato Nery was shot dead on 6 July 2024 outside his office in Cuiabá, Brazil. The killing was linked to a long‑running land‑dispute case over a rural property in Novo São Joaquim. Prosecutors allege that the murder was planned and financed by a couple, Julinere Goulart Bastos and César Jorge Sechi, who suffered a costly losses in the case, and carried out by Alex Roberto de Queiroz with the assistance of several police officers.

During the trial of the first of six defendants, Nery’s daughter, Lívia Nery, testified that the family lived in constant fear after the attack, receiving warnings to change their routine, use an armored vehicle and stay under police protection. She described the execution as a “cold‑blooded” shooting, noting that her father never saw the assailant. The family’s funeral was also guarded by police, underscoring ongoing security concerns.
