Lawyer Ygnacio Sánchez reports assault and detention in Asunción

Lawyer Ygnacio Sánchez has reported being physically assaulted and unlawfully detained during an extrajudicial debt collection attempt in Asunción, Paraguay. Sánchez stated that while representing a client in a property dispute, he was surrounded by a group of individuals linked to the occupant of the premises. According to his account, he was bound at the mouth, hands, and feet and beaten while being recorded by those present.

The Paraguayan Bar Association has issued a statement condemning the incident and expressing solidarity with Sánchez. The association called on the prosecution and relevant authorities to conduct a swift and serious investigation to identify those responsible. The organization highlighted a concerning climate of threats and intimidation against lawyers, judges, and prosecutors, describing such violence as “absolutely intolerable in a rule of law.”

While videos of the incident have circulated on social media, no suspects have been officially charged or detained at this time. Sánchez has indicated he intends to pursue justice through legal channels rather than through retaliation.
