LAX Automated People Mover expected to open in January
The $3.3 billion Automated People Mover at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is expected to begin passenger service in early January, according to a disclosure filing by the contractor, LAX Integrated Express Solutions (LINXS).
While the 2.25-mile automated train is scheduled for completion on December 8, officials noted that the opening date is not guaranteed. The system must undergo 30 days of consecutive testing, receive an independent overview, and pass an assessment by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA). Additionally, a utility agreement with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power must be finalized.
The project, also known as SkyLink, was originally slated to open in 2023. Since construction began in 2019, the project has faced multiple delays, technical challenges, and legal disputes. The budget has increased from an initial $1.9 billion to approximately $3.34 billion. Once operational, the train will connect airport terminals with parking facilities, the rental car center, and the Metro transit station.
