LayerZero introduces Akita to provide quantum-resistant security
LayerZero has introduced Akita, a new polynomial commitment system designed to protect zero-knowledge proofs from potential quantum computing attacks. As a lattice-based scheme, Akita aims to provide post-quantum security while offering greater efficiency than current alternatives.
According to LayerZero, Akita can produce proofs ranging from 65 to 80 kilobytes, which is significantly smaller than the 200 kilobytes required by many hash-based alternatives. This reduction in size could decrease the amount of data networks must process and store. Additionally, the technology is expected to cut Jolt’s proving time by two to three times and reduce memory usage by approximately half.
Developed in partnership with a16z crypto, Akita will be implemented in Jolt, which is used by the Zero blockchain. The use of lattice-based cryptography aligns with US standards for quantum defense, providing developers with a method to upgrade zero-knowledge systems before existing cryptographic methods become vulnerable.
