Spain’s Wind Power Leads Europe as Renewables Remain Cheapest Globally

In 2025 Spain’s wind energy accounted for more than 21% of national electricity demand, making it the leading generation source and the third‑largest wind market in Europe with 32.9 GW installed. The sector employs over 37 000 people and ranks as the world’s fourth‑largest turbine exporter, generating an estimated €3.9 billion in consumer savings.

A Lazard 2026 Levelized Cost of Energy+ study found that renewable technologies, especially onshore wind and utility‑scale solar, continue to be the lowest‑cost option for new‑build power despite rising capital costs and inflation. In the United States, unsubsidized wind and solar have LCOE estimates of $37–$40 /MWh, well below gas, coal and nuclear. The report highlights permitting delays and higher storage costs as the main barriers to faster deployment.

The European Commission has launched a Community of Practice for energy communities to use public procurement to support citizen‑led renewable projects, aiming to improve social inclusion and accelerate clean‑energy adoption across member states.
