Lazarus Chakwera endorsed by MCP officials for 2030 elections

Lazarus Chakwera has received public endorsements from Malawi Congress Party (MCP) grassroots officials to run as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2030 general elections. During a visit to the Mtunthama Trading Centre in Kasungu, Chisomo Mbembeza, the MCP District Chairperson for Kasungu East, formally backed Chakwera.

Kasungu East Member of Parliament Alex Nkhoma also supported the endorsement, citing the economic difficulties faced by farmers. Nkhoma noted that poor farm-gate prices have placed significant pressure on agricultural households, suggesting that the country requires leadership capable of addressing these sector-specific challenges.

Separately, MCP Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda announced that senior party officials will soon meet to establish a framework for internal leadership elections. This move follows a court ruling ordering the party to hold elections for regional and constituency-level leaders. Chimwendo Banda has called for party unity to prevent internal divisions from affecting the party’s future ambitions.
