Lazio activates 116117 non-urgent medical helpline region-wide

The Lazio region has completed the rollout of the European Harmonized Number 116117, making the service active across its entire territory. Following its initial implementation in Rome and Rieti, the service has now been extended to the provinces of Viterbo, Frosinone, and Latina.

Managed by Ares 118 healthcare operators, the 116117 line is a free, 24/7 service designed for non-urgent medical needs and low-priority care. It aims to provide medical advice, guidance to appropriate facilities, and access to continuity of care services, thereby reducing unnecessary pressure on emergency rooms. The service is available to residents, non-residents, and tourists, offering multilingual assistance and a three-level response system involving nursing, medical, and psychological support.

Regional President Francesco Rocca stated that the service is a fundamental component of the regional healthcare network, providing accessibility during nights, weekends, and holidays. While 116117 handles non-emergencies, the 112 and 118 numbers remain the primary contacts for urgent medical emergencies. If an emergency is identified during a 116117 call, the operator will automatically transfer the connection to 118.
