Lazio faces crisis after Coppa Italia exit and fan protests
Lazio faces a period of intense crisis following a humiliating 0-2 defeat to Serie B side Mantova, resulting in their early exit from the Coppa Italia. The loss marks a disastrous start for new manager Gennaro Gattuso, who took over from Maurizio Sarri.
The club is grappling with severe internal friction. Organized fan groups have issued scathing statements against president Claudio Lotito, calling his leadership a “dictatorship” and demanding new owners rather than new players. This discontent is reflected in a massive decline in season ticket renewals, which have reportedly dropped by 93%, leaving the club with low attendance at the Stadio Olimpico.
In response to the poor performance, the club is intensifying efforts in the transfer market. Lazio is heavily pursuing Argentine striker Mauro Icardi to bolster their attack, with reports suggesting the club is willing to make a significant financial effort to secure him. While Icardi remains a primary target, the club is also considering Andrea Pinamonti as an alternative.
