Lazio grapples with sponsor blacklisting and urgent need for player signings

Italian Serie A club Lazio has recorded a financial surplus of more than €30 million from recent player sales, but has yet to convert that income into new signings. Coach Gennaro Gattuso has publicly called for concrete reinforcements to remain competitive for the upcoming season, while fans grow anxious about the club's transfer strategy.

At the same time, Lazio’s primary sponsor, New York‑based prediction‑market platform Polymarket, has been blacklisted by Italian authorities. The regulator blocked Polymarket’s website for operating without a gambling licence, reviving a ban that had previously been suspended. The two‑year sponsorship deal, signed in April and expected to bring €22 million to the club, is now in jeopardy, and Lazio may have to remove the sponsor’s logo from its kit.

The legal controversy adds pressure to club president Claudio Lotito, whose administration already faces a potential €20 million loss from a fan boycott over the sponsorship issue. The combined financial and sporting challenges leave Lazio at a critical crossroads as it seeks to balance its fiscal gains with on‑field ambitions.
