Lazio hires Gennaro Gattusi as manager

Lazio announced Gennaro Gattusi as its new head coach on 23 June, signing a one‑year contract worth €1.5 million with an automatic renewal clause. The renewal is triggered if Lazio finish the Serie A season within the top twelve, allowing the club to retain Gattusi for a second year unless they choose to terminate the agreement.

The appointment follows a disappointing season that ended with a loss in the Coppa Italia final to Inter and strained relations between the club hierarchy and supporters. While club president Claudio Lotito praised Gattusi’s experience and determination, some former Lazio officials, such as journalist Furio Zara, criticized the hire, calling Gattusi’s coaching record a “failure” and questioning his suitability for the role.

Gattusi, a former Italy national‑team coach and ex‑midfielder, will replace Maurizio Sarri, who left after a troubled campaign. The club hopes the new manager can restore cohesion and improve performance in a challenging domestic environment.
