Lazio lakes face microplastic threats and conservation efforts
The aquatic ecosystems of the Lazio region in Italy are facing significant environmental challenges. Scientific monitoring of major lakes, including Lake Bracciano, Lake Bolsena, and the Turano and Salto basins, has revealed concerning levels of microplastic pollution. These particles, measuring less than 5 millimeters, accumulate on lake beds and enter the local fish food chain, driven by waste abandonment and inadequate wastewater filtration.
In response, local authorities are planning urgent countermeasures, including the installation of plastic-trapping barriers at river mouths, enhanced municipal purification systems, and underwater cleaning campaigns.
Parallel to these environmental concerns, the third edition of the Vintage Scuba Days was held at Lake Bracciano. The event brought together divers, scientists, and historians to discuss the intersection of maritime heritage and modern ecosystem protection. Led by diving pioneer Pippo Cappellano, the event featured historical diving equipment and a demonstration involving the Globinautilus submersible, aiming to foster environmental awareness and generational cooperation in marine conservation.
