Lazio Region approves law to combat food waste
The Lazio Regional Council has unanimously approved a new law aimed at promoting a circular food economy, social solidarity, and the reduction of food waste. The legislation, proposed by councilors Daniele Sabatini and Marietta Tidei, establishes a permanent regional model for the recovery and redistribution of both food and non-food surpluses.
Key measures include the introduction of the ‘Lazio Solidale’ label, an ethical recognition designed to reward businesses and non-profit organizations that implement advanced waste prevention and redistribution practices. To support these efforts, the law provides financial incentives such as reductions in waste taxes (TARI) and access to a regional fund for municipalities.
The initiative also focuses on social integration and education. It promotes conscious consumption through school programs and seeks to integrate prison systems into recovery and labor inclusion networks to support those facing economic hardship.
