Lazio Regional Council introduces Italian Sign Language for live streams
The Lazio Regional Council has introduced Italian Sign Language (LIS) interpretation for its live-streamed sessions. Starting September 9, deaf and hard-of-hearing citizens can access council proceedings via the institution's official YouTube channel.
Council President Antonello Aurigemma described the initiative as a significant step toward institutional inclusion and accessibility, aimed at ensuring equal opportunities for accessing public information. The service is supported by dedicated funding to ensure the presence of qualified interpreters during all streamed sessions.
The implementation follows a motion approved in April 2024, which committed the regional administration to introducing LIS translation and subtitling to facilitate the sharing of assembly work. Local representatives noted that the service transforms a political proposal into a concrete tool for democratic participation.
