Lazio strengthens European pharmaceutical and biotech role
The Lazio region is strengthening its position within the European production strategy, particularly in the life sciences sector. The pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries have become vital to the regional economy, with approximately 70 large companies, over 450 enterprises, and 22,000 employees involved in the sector. In 2024, regional pharmaceutical exports reached approximately 15 billion euros, with continued growth reported for 2025.
The regional industrial ecosystem is characterized by a concentration of diverse competencies. Rome serves as a hub for research, universities, and clinical centers, while a surrounding production belt including Pomezia, Latina, and Anagni facilitates specialized processing, quality control, and logistics. This integrated network provides an attractive environment for international investment.
To support this industrial evolution, the Lazio Region has launched the ‘Filiere Tecnologiche’ initiative. Funded through the FESR Lazio 2021-2027 program, the 55 million euro fund is designed to support experimental development projects. These projects involve collaborations between small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), large corporations, and research centers to enhance competitiveness and technological transfer in line with European strategic technologies.
