Lübeck celebrates 125 years of Thomas Mann’s Buddenbrooks

The city of Lübeck is celebrating the 125th anniversary of the publication of Thomas Mann’s novel, ‘Buddenbrooks. The Decline of a Family’. Originally published on October 13, 1901, the work is credited with bringing international literary fame to the city.

To mark the occasion, various events including readings and special exhibitions are being held. The museum Buddenbrookhaus is hosting an exhibition titled ‘Family Affairs. 125 Years of Buddenbrooks’, which explores family dynamics, societal expectations, and the struggles of the novel’s central characters through the lens of modern relevance.

However, the celebrations face a logistical challenge as the Buddenbrookhaus museum has been closed for renovations since 2020. Due to ongoing construction, the facility is not expected to reopen until 2030, leaving tourists to view the landmark building from the outside.
