Lübeck politicians approve funding for theater renovation planning

Lübeck politicians have reached a cross-party agreement to initiate the renovation of Theater Lübeck by allocating three million euros from the 2027 budget for preliminary planning. This funding is considered a prerequisite for securing necessary grants from federal and state governments for the total project, which is estimated to cost approximately 217 million euros.

The planning phase is expected to require a total of nine million euros over three years. The strategy aims to address energy efficiency, accessibility, inclusion, and digitalization. While a broad coalition including the SPD, CDU, Greens, Left, and Free Voters supports the move to ensure the theater's long-term survival, the FDP has voiced strong opposition.

The FDP warns that committing millions to planning while the overall financing remains uncertain is fiscally irresponsible. They have called for a two-point plan that prioritizes budgetary stability and extensive citizen participation to ensure the project maintains public acceptance and does not pose an uncalculable risk to taxpayers.
