Lübeck Port Authority manages water plant growth in Wakenitz

The Lübeck Port Authority (LPA) has been removing excessive water plants from the Wakenitz river to address significant growth that has intensified in recent years. While the plant density does not currently obstruct water drainage, it has restricted recreational activities for swimmers, boaters, and anglers in certain areas.

Since late August, the LPA has targeted specific locations, including the Falkendamm quay, the flood protection system, and the Dükerkanal, to remove accumulated vegetation. To protect the local ecosystem, the LPA has utilized a method of temporary land-based storage for the plants. This allows small organisms such as snails, crustaceans, and insect larvae attached to the vegetation an opportunity to return to the water.

In collaboration with the Lower Nature Conservation Authority (UNV), the LPA is currently developing a needs-based maintenance concept for the upcoming year to manage the river's delicate habitat and ensure its continued use as a popular local recreation area.
