Élcio Queiroz authorized to transfer to Rio de Janeiro prison
Judge Rafael Estrela Nóbrega of the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice has authorized the transfer of Élcio Queiroz from the Brasília-based Papuda Complex to a prison facility in Rio de Janeiro. Queiroz, who was sentenced to 76 years and 6 months for the murders of councilwoman Marielle Franco and driver Anderson Gomes, as well as the attempted murder of an advisor, is currently serving his sentence in the Federal District.
The decision follows a request from the defense, citing the family's financial inability to travel frequently to Brasília and the need to facilitate social reintegration through family contact. The Rio de Janeiro Public Prosecutor's Office did not oppose the move, noting that the transfer aligns with a clause in Queiroz's plea bargain agreement, which requires him to serve his sentence in Rio de Janeiro state territory.
Furthermore, the judge noted that the transfer would improve the ability of the Rio de Janeiro Public Prosecutor's Office to monitor the conditions of the plea bargain. The Rio de Janeiro State Penal Police Secretariat has confirmed it has the capacity to ensure the secure custody of the prisoner.
