LCT Legenda Nusantara 699 ship fire kills two in Southeast Sulawesi

A fire broke out on the LCT Legenda Nusantara 699 in the Kabaena waters, Tiworo Strait, Southeast Sulawesi, on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. The vessel was transporting heavy equipment and chemical loads on a route from Jakarta to Morowali.

Authorities confirmed that all 13 crew members were successfully evacuated. However, two crew members—a Second Mate and a Third Oiler—died during the incident. Several others suffered from severe chemical poisoning; four crew members required intensive medical care at RSUD dr. H. LMS Baharuddin in Muna Regency.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest that waves caused the cargo to shift, potentially leading to a leak in the chemical IBC tanks, or that a leak occurred directly in the middle of the sea.
