Kosovo officials face scrutiny after Arlinda Zekaj murder

Kosovo's Minister of Justice, Donika Gërvalla, and Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla, have refused calls for their resignation following the murder of 49-year-old Arlinda Zekaj. The incident, which occurred on October 25 in Vitomirica, Peja, has sparked widespread public protests and accusations of institutional negligence.

A special report submitted to Prime Minister Albin Kurti indicates that Zekaj had repeatedly sought protection after reporting physical and psychological violence from her former husband. Key findings suggest that despite her reports on July 10, 2026, and subsequent requests for emergency protection orders in September, authorities failed to verify her claims regarding her ex-husband's possession of a firearm.

As a result of the investigation by the Kosovo Police Inspectorate, 11 police officials have been suspended, including the Regional Director of Police in Peja and several high-ranking investigators and commanders. Additionally, the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council suspended Chief Prosecutor Lumturije Vuçetaj and prosecutor Arlinda Nallbani-Gacaferri. The Kosovo Assembly has established an 11-member investigative commission to examine institutional failures in the case.
