LDS Church donates $1 million to oppose Idaho abortion initiative

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has donated $1 million to the Too Extreme for Idaho PAC to oppose Proposition 1, a ballot initiative scheduled for the November 3 vote. The measure, known as the Idaho Reproductive Freedom and Privacy Act, seeks to restore reproductive rights in the state by allowing abortions up to fetal viability and in medical emergencies.

The donation provides a nearly 40% boost to the PAC's existing funds. The church's contribution is part of an interfaith opposition effort involving the Idaho Family Policy Center and the Catholic Diocese of Boise. Tom Luna, a representative for the campaign and former chair of the Idaho Republican Party, stated that while religious groups may have doctrinal differences, they are united in protecting life.

In contrast, the campaign supporting the measure, Idahoans United for Women and Families, has raised approximately $4.5 million. The church released a statement noting that while it remains neutral toward political candidates, it actively addresses ballot initiatives it believes carry significant moral consequences.
