Le Cesine Nature Reserve hosts educational visit on coastal dune protection
Over 70 participants, including families and young people, took part in a guided field visit at the Le Cesine Nature Reserve and WWF Oasis to study coastal dune ecosystems. The initiative was part of the ReMaRe (Marine and Coastal Recovery for Resilient Communities) project, a partnership between WWF Italy and the reserve management aimed at regenerating habitats in the southern Adriatic and combating coastal erosion.
During the two-hour session, experts provided technical insights into the area's geological and botanical importance. Marco Delle Rose, a geologist from the CNR, explained the sedimentary processes and geological history that shape the coastline and contribute to its current structural vulnerabilities. Piero Medagli, a botanist from the University of Salento, detailed how native dune vegetation acts as a natural stabilizer, helping the dunes resist wind, storm surges, and human pressure.
Giuseppe De Matteis, director of the Le Cesine Nature Reserve, emphasized that these dunes serve as a vital dynamic barrier protecting the coastal marshland's biodiversity from the sea and extreme climatic events.
